As of last Friday night, I turned in my Applied Calculus 1 Exam and was officially done with my first semester of college @ the University of Texas at Dallas. These past few months have truly been an experience for me as it’s been fulfilled with tons of events — so I wanted to share it with you all.
August 21st, 2018 — first day of the semester and my first day of college. I was honestly filled with quite mixed emotions as I couldn’t believe that I was starting college, I was here, one of the big guys, and truly a part of the “broke college students” club that I always see in Twitter memes. Anyways, back to my first day: I got to college, drove up there (In case you didn’t know, I’m a commuter as I’ve lived in Richardson, TX for the past few years), and was excited to start my classes. On my original class schedule, my first class on Monday was an 8:00AM History Lecture — yikes was that a mistake and I quickly changed that the following week as 8AM for any college student is WAY TO EARLY. The first week, I got to meet my professors and proactively introduced myself to many students in my classes (great to make some good friends at the beginning of the year so you can make some good study groups).
The first weeks of school at UT Dallas are filled with hosted events from the university and many clubs, known as the “Weeks of Welcome”. Since UTD used to be a commuter school (or is still transitioning from it), they created this program to engage more students in campus life — and it was pretty sweet! We had things like FREE FOOD, activities at the plinth, and one of my favorites: The Silent Disco.
Being a commuter, I definitely wanted to get involved with student life so I involved myself in many activities. Within the first month of college, I joined the Swimming Club Team, Gymnastics Team, and even tried cheerleading for a practice or two (quite the experience and made me see a different point of view on what goes into cheerleading). I even went for Student Government however realized I didn’t have the time for that as I also became the first undergraduate Marketing Ambassador for UT Dallas Dining Services, from my experience of running and creating the @UTDCometLife social media pages (previously known as @utdallas2022 — The UTD Class of 2022 accounts which I used to network with many students, welcome them, and connect many of us before the school started, as well as spread many event details happening on campus). I also joined the newly started University of Texas at Dallas Varsity Esports Team as the Assistant Coach, under the athletics department. Oh, did I mention I also got involved in Greek Life as I rushed and became an active member of Phi Delta Theta: Texas Upsilon Chapter? Yeah — this semester was quite eventful.
As the semester went on, I left a few of these organizations and perused primarily the Esports Program, Phi Delt, and UTD Dining as these were my true passions and felt really connected with these. Now when I go through my future years at the university, I’ll have a great group of brothers who I can rely on, a fantastic competitive esports team which I’ll be helping manage, and also doing what I love: social media + food for dining services.
So yeah, I was quite involved and busy this semester, and I loved every single second. 🙂
Here are a few of my favorite memories of the semester which you can find on my Instagram Page:
Block Party @ NorthSide – My first concert I guess??
Being the first #CometPride winner of the semester for the most Orange and Green pride @ UT Dallas.
Dallas PRIDE w/ some Comet Friends
Phi Delta Theta – Gamma Class Bid Day
OP Live Dallas – Esports Team’s first Tournament
Oozeball 2018 – This is the most muddiest I have ever been in my life (took me 3 days to get all of the dirt out of my hair)
My 18th Birthday – Celebrate w/ my fraternity, esports team, and marketing team!
Halloween Party – Dressing up as baywatch with my brothers was soooo much fun. And yes, we rocked that look.
Midwest Tulsa Tournament – Esports League of Legend’s first away tournament. Such a fantastic weekend and success for the team! (We got 2nd and 3rd!) Also… this may be my favorite picture ever of our team.
Homecoming Week – UTD’s homecoming with no football team > anyone elses (don’t @ me).
Modeling for Homecoming Fashion Show – I live for this (tbh wish I could’ve kept the outfit I modeled in… sooo cute)
Phi Delt Brotherhood Retreat – Officially an active member!
The Esports Team Mean GirlsTM
Christmas Season with my fraternity is the best season (other than Halloween, b/c that’s the best holiday)
As they say, college is truly what you make it. I decided to go fully out there and successfully had a fantastic semester, with even fantastic academics of an average A-. Cheers to this past semester, and to those who made it such a memorable one! I look forward to the future years at UT Dallas! Go Comets ☄️! #whoosh
